Louis graduated high school from the Culver Military Academy, Culver Indiana as Captain of the Black Horse Troop and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Cavalry. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he met his future wife, Helen Josephine Reichert, a classmate of Louis’ sister, Gracie. Gracie said that she wanted her brother to meet the cutest freshman in the whole class! Louis and Helen were married and moved to Chicago while Louis attended Northwestern University Medical School, where he was a member of the Nu Sigma Nu medical fraternity. Louis graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelors of Science and a Medical degree. After graduation, they moved to St. Paul, Minnesota where Louis completed a Pathology fellowship at the University of Minnesota and an internship in Surgery at Ancker Memorial Hospital.

The couple moved back to Racine, Wisconsin where Louis joined his father’s medical-surgical practice. For many years, the couple lived in their historic Main Street house where Louis was born and also had his medical office so he could be near his growing family. Louis practiced at both St. Luke’s and St. Mary’s hospitals in Racine. At St. Mary’s Hospital he served as President of the Medical Staff, as well as, Vice-Chair and then Chairman of the Department of Surgery. He was also President of the Racine Medical Society, a delegate to the Wisconsin State Medical Society and a member of the Wisconsin Surgical Society. Louis published multiple scientific papers on surgical procedures. He was also active in the community and served as a member of the Comprehensive Health Planning Review Board of Southeastern Wisconsin from 1970-1977, including Chairman of this committee and the Neighborhood Health Centers Committee. He was on the Board of Directors of the Racine YMCA, the Racine Goodwill Corporation and the Racine Historical Museum. He was also a member of the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution.

Louis was elected to Fellowship in both the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the International College of Surgeons. He was a member of American Medical Association and received the AMA Recognition award every year from 1975-1984. He was a life member of the Nathan Smith Davis Club, Northwestern University Medical School.

Louis found fulfillment volunteering for the Indian Health Service (USPHS) from 1978 to 1989. Helen accompanied him on these month long service projects and she also volunteered on the reservations. They worked at the public health clinics in Barrow, AK; Poplar, MT; Owyhee, NV; Independence, VA and Peach Springs, AZ.

After Louis and Helen retired, they moved to Florida and became avid and competitive duplicate bridge players. They were founding members of the Vero Beach Duplicate Bridge Club and always partnered together! They achieved Silver Life Masters status.

Whenever he was asked how long they were married, he would say, “Not long enough!” Louis will be greatly missed by Helen, his five loving children (and spouses), Victoria Fazen Wheary (James T. W. Wheary), Louis E. Fazen, III, MD (N. Lynn Eckhert MD, DrPH), Robert J. Fazen (Marianne F. Fazen, PhD), Lynn Fazen Reich (Gregory M. Reich, DDS, MS), Maryellen Fazen Eckenhoff, PhD (Roderic G.
